"What I Do for Students and Their Families"
Hello!
Welcome to the English Language Learner (ELL) Specialist information page!
My name is Kathy Dranchak and I began working for the Old Rochester Superintendency Union 55 School District in the summer of 2014 as the district’s ELL Specialist. I am delighted to be working with our district teachers, principals, support staff and central administration as we develop support for our district English Language Learner students. Before working in this district, I had the great pleasure of teaching English Language Learner students in Rhode Island and in other Massachusetts school districts.
My experience in education includes employment as a English Language Learner teacher, as a special education teacher, a content area teacher in Social Studies, English, and Reading, and I have experience teaching and as an administrator at all levels. I have had the great privilege to work as a special education team chair, as a special education director, and as an Instructional Leader in English. My interest in working with ELL students and designing ELL curriculum was inspired by the first opportunity I had to work with these motivated and fascinating learners.
To support our ELL students I work in each of the district elementary schools, the Junior High and High School. The ELL Handbook, is updated every year and is a great guide for parents, ELL students and district employees. The handbook lists the procedures and protocols for ELL student identification, the goals for English Language Learner instruction, and the benchmarks we follow that allow us to recognize each ELL student’s progress toward English Language proficiency.
Part of my responsibility is to administer annual tests to each ELL student who is receiving ELL support. Additionally, I am responsible for meeting with ELL parents and helping them fill out the Student Home Language Survey (this typically takes place when a student enters the district). Another aspect of my role as the ELL specialist is working directly with each ELL student who is receiving English Language Instruction. Therefore, I work collaboratively with each ELL students’ regular education teachers.
Professionally, I am delighted to be working with a variety of grade level teams and teachers and with a very diverse group of English Language Learners. The support and welcome I have received from the district is heart-warming! The district’s strong commitment to the success of every student includes its commitment to the success of each ELL student.
I look forward to working with all members of the district as we collaborate on best practices to assist our ELL students in accessing the curriculum and making excellent progress toward their learning goals. You may contact me by calling any of the schools and leaving a message for me, or by emailing me at: [email protected] I will also be happy to leave you my cell number if you contact me through email.
Respectfully yours,
Ms. Kathy A. Dranchak, C.A.G.S
